An introduction to Spanish based on real-life situations. Comprehension and basic speaking skills are emphasized. Some reading and writing is required, as well as an introduction to various aspects of Spanish-speaking societies.

The materials used in this course are Open Educational Resources (OER) to reduce the cost of education. Students pay only a 30$ fee for adaptive learning software. This is is a 4 credit hours course, delivered completely online. It consists of active learning focused on developing communicative skills. Students will engage in work individually and in collaboration with peers and the instructor, through synchronous and asynchronous interactions. Synchronous(live) web-conference meetings will not be longer than an hour and a half within the days/times indicated in the posted class schedule and will be recorded for later access. The rest of the credits will be completed as asynchronous work -on the students own time- on a daily basis with specific due dates. Students planning to continue to the next language level must register for this course as "graded" rather than "P/NP," since subsequent levels require a grade of "C" or better.
