Gender, Race, and Media
This course critically examines how ideologies of gender, race, class, ethnicity and sexuality are produced and disseminated in a range of media genres and forms such as film, television, music, advertising, news, visual and performing arts, the Internet, radio, and print media. As consumers and producers of media, students will learn to
assess how media articulates, creates, and enforces identities and power. Students will practice tools of critical reading and thinking, such as textual analysis, visual discourse analysis, and the basics of media literacy. Recommended Preparation: GWST 100 and (200 or 210).

This hybrid course requires both classroom and online time; reliable internet access and computer literacy; and the ability to self-manage independent learning assignments according to deadlines. In place of reduced classroom hours, required online work is connected to classroom learning and may include independent mastery assignments, discussion boards, videos with quizzes, writing assignments, and other active learning experiences. Students are responsible for both classroom attendance and completing these out-of-classroom learning experiences by the specified deadlines and in accordance with instructor requirements. The in person portion of the class meets on Tuesdays at 1pm-4:10pm. Also listed as MLL 322 and GWST 322.
